Money Isn’t Scary: Debunking Stereotypes About Women and Money
Dec 15, 2023I had the awesome opportunity to talk with Certified Financial Planner Meghan Dwyer, who is also the host of the Money Isn’t Scary podcast. Meghan's goal is to make women feel confident and abundant in their money decisions instead of making decisions from a place of fear and scarcity.
You don't need to "play small" with your money. Let's up your knowledge game, earning, spending, and negotiation power. She shared all that women can do to overcome challenges and take charge of their inances.
Women are good with money. Full stop. Meghan and I broke down the ridiculous stereotypes around women and money... including this recent concept of "girl math," the idea that stay at home moms are lazy, or that women are "hiding" purchases from their husbands. We have to pick apart the cultural norms and set a different course for women to stand in their power financially.
Historically men have often handled the family budget. Many women feel shame around their lack of knowledge or finding themselves in a place where they have no idea what their financial life looks like. Meghan and I talked about leaving shame behind during your divorce and beyond. No matter what knowledge gap you may have, we can help you get to the other side of your divorce with more knowledge and more power.
Meghan wants to help women grab onto the power that they DO have in their financial lives. It is never too late to learn things. One of her biggest tips is to know what you own, what you owe, what your family's actual post-tax cash flow is, and what your family is spending.
She holds women's hands through difficult transitions in their lives like divorce. During your divorce you may feel thrust into a financial place you never expected. It is important to remember that you are smart, worthy, and capable, that is your reality. Learning to trust yourself financially and set goals that feel good to YOU is possible.
